How to choose good online content
Many children under 5 engage in screen time—video calling with family, playing online games, or watching their favourite programs. Choosing quality content helps make sure they get the most out of it.

The quality of your child’s screen time matters
Not all screen time is equal. Some shows, games and apps are more appropriate for toddlers and preschoolers than others. Quality content can support learning, language, creativity and healthy habits—without replacing face-to-face play and conversation.
How to choose quality content
Early-years specialists often suggest thinking about content as a window, a mirror, or a magnifying glass. Ask a few quick questions to see where a show or app fits—quality content will usually tick one (or more) of these boxes.
Is it a window?
- Does it give your child a view of something beyond their own experience?
- Are they learning something new (sea life, dancing, dinosaurs, space)?
- Does it spark imagination and curiosity—and prompt questions?
Is it a mirror?
- Does it reflect your child’s interests and your family’s values?
- Does it build on an activity they already enjoy offline?
- Does it include positive, relatable stories about kindness, sharing, turn-taking and respect?
Is it a magnifying glass?
- Does it offer chances to explore the world or try a new skill?
- Does it reward creativity, problem-solving and planning?
- Does it help them move, draw, build, pretend, or navigate a real-world space (e.g. a zoo map)?
Practical tips
- Know the content — try apps/shows first or use them together.
- Watch or play together — co-viewing encourages talk, questions and critical thinking.
- Check age range — use reviews/ratings to match your child’s stage.
- Advertising — be cautious with ad-heavy content or things built around products.
- ‘Addictive’ loops — prefer apps that allow breaks and don’t pressure “one more go”.
- Gender & diversity — look for positive messages and balanced representation.
